R&D Project Manager Encourages You to Start EARLY

Name: Bradley Schniers

PhD: Biomedical Science & Biochemistry, Texas Tech University Health Science Center, 2022

What was your main area of research?

I performed research and completed my dissertation on nutrient transporters in pancreatic cancer. There are certain nutrient transporters upregulated in pancreatic cancer that cause it to rapidly grow and metastasize with locally available nutrients. Our research proved this and pivoted towards treatment options and how to change pancreatic cancer treatments.

What is your current job?

I am a R&D Project Manager for Phibro Animal Health, and I work remotely.

I oversee and track R&D projects within the animal health division, budget analysis, and R&D portfolio review.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

I really appreciate the longevity of everyone who works here and the job security. There is a lot of uncertainty in the job market right now, so finding a position that is secure is extremely important.

What is the most important skill you developed or experience you had during your PhD that now helps you in your current position?

Critical thinking - being able to analyze and evaluate different situations and projects critically

How did you build the skills necessary for your current role?

My first job out of my PhD gave me a lot of the current skills I use in my current role. I was able to learn management techniques, industry expectations, and better communication skills through that position.

How did you find this position? What were the career steps you took to get to where you are now?

LinkedIn

PhD graduate ➡️ industry entry position ➡️ postdoctoral fellow ➡️ R&D Project Manager

If someone is interested in a similar role, what would you recommend they start doing now to prepare?

Network.

Find as many people in similar roles at companies as you can to ask about the industry and just discuss their experiences. Get your name out there and learn about the positions.

Why did you decide to not pursue a career in academia?

This was an easy decision. I wanted to be present for my family and make a decent salary. Neither of those were possible in academia, with long research hours and a low salary expected for the first few years.

What advice do you have for someone getting their PhD and looking to pursue a career outside of academia?

Start exploring options and looking for career opportunities EARLY. Don't wait until the last semester to start looking. The sooner you can network and look for an opportunity, the better. If possible, do an internship with a company early in your PhD.
